Question 1: Where did it all begin? This is the question addressed by the Epic of Creation. It does this “in three sections: the creation of the primordial deities, the combat between Marduk and Tiamat, and the creation of the world and human beings” (Norton 41). Why is this set-up effective? What sorts of questions does it answer? What is the role of water in this myth? As opposed to Descent, the role of women in the Epic has changed to the creator of chaos, the being that must be defeated. Why do you think this change was made? What does it say about society at the time? Discuss Tiamat – her personality, what happens to her, her impact on humanity, etc.

Question 2: The “Descent of Inanna” is the oldest text we will read. It is full of symbolism that resonates in many other mythological systems found throughout different times and places. Discuss some of the symbolism in “Descent,” especially the story as it relates to seasons and life and death. Another unique aspect of this work is matriarchal focus. Why is this important? What does it say about that society? Why do you think society changed to a patriarchal focus?
