The core assignment of this course is a documented research paper (1500-2000 words in length = approx. 6 – 8 pages double spaced, 12-point font).

 

The paper should support a thesis statement with information gained from research or investigation.
The paper will not be just a report presenting information, but will be a paper that carefully examines and presents your own historical interpretation of the topic you have chosen and your interpretation of the information you have gathered.
The paper may include consideration of problems and solutions, define key terms, or refute arguments against your thesis statement.
It will be important to choose a topic of interest to you.

 

Approach this assignment with an open and skeptical mind, then form an opinion based on what you have discovered.
You must suspend belief while you are investigating and let the discoveries shape your opinion. (This is a thesis-finding approach.)
Once you have found your thesis, write the paper to support it.
You will use some of the following critical thinking skills in this process:

Gathering information, summarizing sources

Because this may be a longer paper than you have written before and a complex process is involved, it is recommended that you complete this paper using the following steps:

 

Choose a topic related to U.S. History up to 1877 (Chapters 1-15) that you would truly like to explore and that you are willing to spend some time on. Your chosen topic should be focused. Pose a question that you really want to answer. You may want to begin with more than one topic in mind.
Do some preliminary reading on the topic(s). You may begin with the textbook, then further explore the information available. Refine your topic. Summarize your topic, your interest in the topic, the questions you want to answer, and a hypothesis you want to test.
Gather information from a variety of sources. Use a minimum of four sources for your paper, and at least one must be a primary source.
Examples of primary sources are ones that are used in our discussion forums 2 – 8.
They are sources that are contemporary to the times under investigation.
An example of a secondary source is our textbook, though the textbook also contains excerpts of primary sources, which you may use as a source in your paper.
Outline the results of your research and the plan for your paper (you are not required to submit the outline).
Write the final draft and be sure to include a Works Cited List, and use the correct MLA documentation style.

Students experiment with assembly process models and configure an efficient production environment. The simulation explores concepts in process analysis through a series of simulation models and related problem sets.

The Story

Students work with process models over time in this series of problems dealing with production environments. While experimenting, students can monitor throughput, cycle times, production capacity, and utilization rates. Students add workers or set task times to improve yield.

Welcome to the Process Analytics Simulation

 

This application will let you experiment with process models by simulating them over time, or calculating them analytically.

 

Definitions

 

As you go through the exercises, please note the following definitions of terms that  may be used.

 

 

Cycle time for a production line is the time between successive (finished product) units coming off the end of the line.

 

Throughput time is the minimum time it takes one unit to go from the beginning to the end of the line.

 

Capacity is the number of units finished in a specified time (here, an hour).

 

Utilization for a workstation is the fraction of time that the workstation is busy, i.e., time actually working ÷ time available

 

How to play

 

You can run most simulations in either Animated mode (use the play/pause button and the animation speed slider) or Calculated mode (Calculate button). Either will produce results shown in the Process Metrics section.

 

Use the “Clear Diagram” link to reset an Animation (but retain any workstation configuration settings). Use the “Reset to Defaults” link to reset the screen including resetting workstation configuration settings.

 

The “Show Results” link displays results data (which you can export to Excel) for any Calculated runs.

  • It is expected the depth of the research goes beyond your studies in the core courses (MSM students) or HCAD 600 (MSHCA students). Please review the policy for re-use of prior course work – even if it is your own.
  • In order to provide a comprehensive assessment, the selected journal article should be supported (or refuted) by other scholarly sources.
  • As you know from your Library Skills course, sources such as TimeForbes, the Washington Post and other newspapers, while often useful information resources, would not be appropriate primary sources for this paper. As a general guideline, if you can find the resource at a magazine stand, it probably is not a professional journal. The articles you choose should be recent (last 5 years) and should be primary rather than secondary. (Please see the APA manual if you do not recall the difference.)

Evaluation: What is your evaluation of the recommendations you are making, the likely downsides and challenges and are there any likely unintended consequences. What does the board need to know to make an “informed decision” about the issues?
