Here you will dig more deeply into literature and apply close reading skills to the story you have chosen for your first paper.

First, read all five short stories in this week’s Learning Resources. Then, select one story to base your first paper on. (If you wish to propose a story not on the list, consult with your instructor as soon as possible and before the due date for the discussion. Ideally, it would be a short story that your instructor can have access to via the web or a library database).

Read the story carefully and in one to two well-composed paragraphs, address the following:

• Return to the definitions of literature in Week 1. In two to three sentences (or more, if needed) articulate your own working definition of literature based on those materials.
• Apply your definition to the story you have chosen. Discuss the ways the story adheres to your working definition of literature.
• In a few sentences, discuss why you think the story is worth reading. (You will expand on this concept in your paper).
