For Essay, explicate two poems or songs. One poem or song has to be selected from among those we studied as a class, available in Module 4. The other can be of your own choosing, but you must provide the text of the poem along with a reference showing where it came from. If you choose a poem in a different language, be sure to provide a translation.

Focus on each text’s themes. Describe how the writer has worked the theme into the text. What is the dramatic situation in each text? Who is the speaker? What powerful figurative language use do you see in each text? What poetic techniques has the writer used to convey any important ideas or emotions? How well did these techniques work for you as a reader? For a poem that originally appeared in another language, feel free to use any expertise you have in that language to explain the use of sound by the poet.

Unify your essay in your introduction by telling your readers what to expect from your essay. Aim to write one thesis statement about both poetic texts, but if that statement turns into a long sentence, feel free to split it into two parts, each focusing on one text.
