1 . METROPOLITAN CROWDS [16 points]: How, according to a) G. Simmel, b) Liang, and c) at least 1 primary source you name, did the crowd or crowded conditions impact Berliners in their everyday life, emotion, or outlook? For each author, note the identified impact and provide concrete evidence from the relevant text/historic document.

2. MODERNITY VS. TRADITION [16 points].: According to Alexandra Richie, “Berlin’s modernity had little impact on the ‘official culture.’” This raises the larger question: was modernity embraced or rejected in Berlin, 1880-1914? To answer, identify at least 3 areas/categories you will consider where you see a) an embrace of modernity and/or b) Berliners rejecting it, turning instead to tradition and the past. Weigh the evidence from our course’s primary and secondary sources before your draw your conclusion [i.e. that modernity was embraced, was only partially embraced, was rejected]

3. Based on primary and secondary source evidence from our class, a) What factors and concrete evidence might historians invoke to show the extent of authoritarian power in Wilhelmine Berlin? b) What factors and concrete evidence might historians invoke to show working class agency?

4. BONUS QUESTION [2 bonus points]: What is the most interesting text or issue you have encountered in this class, and why is it relevant to you?
