For this assignment, you will need to have read chapter 17 in America and the following documents from For the Record: Henry Grady’s “The New South” (pages 36-37), “A Sharecrop Contract” (pages 37-39), Plessy v. Ferguson (pages 39-41), Booker T. Washington’s “The Atlanta Compromise” (pages 41-43), John Hope’s “A Critique of the Atlanta Compromise” (page 44), and Benjamin Singleton’s “Negro Exodus from the Southern States” (pages 47-48). After reading the aforementioned material, respond to the following questions:
1. What was Henry Grady’s vision for the post-Reconstruction South?
2. To what extent did Grady’s vision materialize?
