Attached is theService Analysis Essay – You are required to submit a 600-700 word essay, responding to the prompt below. This paper should not exceed 700 words in length. To succeed with this paper you should incorporate key points from our readings, discussions, research you conduct on one of SU’s community partners, and your own thoughts and life experiences. Use APA citations when appropriate. Please double-space your written work.

Research one of Seattle University’s community partners. Links to our community partners are available on the “IDLS 3000 Toolkit Edit download” (linked here). They are identified beneath each of the various districts (e.g. Yesler Terrace, Central District, First Hill, and so on) directly below the **Key community Partners in the area heading. I want each of you to choose a different community partner, so you will need to check in with me to make sure the one you want hasn’t already been taken. I will assign them on a first-come, first-served basis; so make your request early. Your research on your sight will provide the context for your reflections.

As you research your community partner, consider how they attempt to serve ethically and effectively in response to Ivan Illich and other critics. Ivan Illich offers a strongly worded and deeply critical assessment of Americans “doing service” in Mexico. Jonathan McKnight presents strong arguments of the “shadow side of service.” Sara Mosle offers a critical perspective on the role of volunteerism. Mary Louise Pratt introduces a useful and complex framework for thinking about interactions (clashes and collaborations) in service sites. And Fadiman underscores the complexities of cross-cultural contact zones.

How might the site you selected respond to the critiques of Illich, McKnight, Mosle, Pratt, Fadiman, and others? Please provide an initial short overview of your organization including its mission and key programs. Once you have completed the short overview please apply the various critiques of service to your service site. In other words, does the organization you selected provide ethical and effective service? If so, how? If not, why not? Please be as specific as possible with your analysis. Your grade will be based on how well you incorporate discussions/readings; on how thorough and thoughtful analysis you provide is; and on the writing quality (more specific rubric to follow).
