Last week you worked on formal color theory exercises based around formal intervention and strict rules for engagement. For this week, I want you to work with color again but this time more fluidly and without the same structure of rules.

For this assignment you should make 3 unique collages, each using color to represent an emotion from the list below. Each collage should include a minimum of one illustration or photograph and a minimum of 3 unique colors (they can be various shades or tints of one color if you like). The illustration or photograph can be taken/made by you OR someone else. The illustration can be abstract, such as a simple drawing of a body, or literal, such as a photo of a body. The collages can be made digitally OR physically. If made physically you can use colored paper, color pencils, crayons, markers, or paint. Either digital or physical, remember these need to be collages meaning that they should include multiple elements combined to create meaning. For example, papers torn and stacked, photographs, illustrations, etc. If working digitally, think of tiling colors, creating a sensation of depth or stacking- ensuring it’s clear multiple elements and planes are present. You can include text in the work itself, but you don’t need to.

The goal of this exercise is to think about the relationship we have with color, how we use it to provoke, illustrate, or explain emotion. If you would like, allow yourself to work abstractly here! What represents a feeling like anger to you does not need to universally look like how we have historically seen anger represented. You can use clean lines, or be messy, you can be minimal or be chaotic, try to explore.

When complete, combine all digital files or images into one PDF, label them according to their emotions, and upload to Canvas.
