Take home essay exam:

Grading will be based on a holistic assessment of these six factors:

  • Accuracy
  • Completeness
  • Writing
  • Textual Engagement
  • Philosophical Depth
  • Philosophical Pizazz (The ‘Wow!” factor)

Essay #1 (Maximum 500 words). Choose one of the following topics:

  • Kollantai: What is love/comradeship (“winged Eros”) on Kollantai’s view and whatare the material conditions that give rise to it. Enter one objection, or add one supporting argument to Kollantai’s claim.
  • Solomon: What are the philosophical commitments that lead Solomon to claim that “independence is an act of defiance and perversity” (204)? Comment on Solomon’s
  • Beauvoir: What is authentic love for Beauvoir? What is its central principle? Can you embrace this central principle or do you find it problematic (say why)?
  • Caverero: Explain how Cavarero distinguishes between the “who” of the beloved and the “what” of the beloved, and respond to her account of this distinction.
  • Nussbaum: What role does Nussbaum believe philosophy can play in our love lives? At what points does philosophy help? Why? Do you agree or disagree.

Essay #2 (Maximum 1000 words).

Often, viewed from the outside, we see a lover idealizing their beloved to the point of seeming unable or unwilling to see their faults, or they may even seem to love their beloved’s faults. The authors in this section of the course have various views about whether lovers should idealize (or idolize) their beloved. Solomon, for example, praises the idealization of the beloved. Beauvoir criticizes the idealization of the beloved as “idolatrous.” Caverero deals with this issue by arguing that love is, in some important sense, beyond morality. What is your view (start your essay with this). Explore this question by examining the views of the three thinkers. Defend your view with the help of, or against the arguments of, each of the three.

General Guidelines: You must cite the texts. Please don’t over-cite the texts. For a paper the length of these essays, a couple sentences at a time should be the longest citation. Use parenthetical, author-page references (Caverero 111), (Solomon 232), both when you cite the text directly and when you are paraphrasing a particular point. Please do not consult other sources, don’t use any websites in your responses. Use the original sources only (the readings assigned in this class)—just the texts and you thinking about them is all you need.
