Socrates and Descartes both seem to use the existence of souls as part of their philosophy. Socrates’ proof for souls is in the Phaedo (and we’re not reading that), but we read Descartes this week. His argument is that, essentially, we can conceive of persons without bodies. Perhaps computers can hold our consciousness instead? Nonetheless, he argues thinking is the most fundamental part of personhood, not a body. Therefore, before we are bodies, we must be minds.1) Is Descartes’ argument logical? 2) Are souls real?
