Other Homework Help. What Is a Work of Art?

Required Resources

Read/review the following resources for this activity:

  • Textbook: Chapter 2
  • Lesson
  • Minimum of 1 scholarly source

Initial Post Instructions
If art lacks a clear definition, what criteria are used to determine what a work of art is? Please look at several works on any museum website to discuss what constitutes “art.” Some major museums include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, or National Gallery of Art, or consider finding a local museum. The permanent collection is normally under the Collections link, but feel free to explore the entire website for your selection.

For the initial post, address the following:

  • What approaches should we take in responding to a work of art?
  • Select an example of art that fits your definition of art and provide an example of non-art (either from the site or in the world around you).
  • Determine how line, color, texture, and/or composition are part of your definition.

Follow-Up Post Instructions
Respond to at least two peers or one peer and the instructor. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification.

Writing Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 posts (1 initial & 2 follow-up)
  • Minimum of 2 sources cited (assigned readings/online lessons and an outside source)
  • APA format for in-text citations and list of references

Student Sample: What is a work of art? There is no correct answer to this question. While textbooks and famous artists from history may give you an answer, they will probably all be different answers. A work of art is completely up to the individual looking at it. Our text gives a great example of how we can perceive art. “in architecture we recognize churches and office buildings as distinct because of our conception of what churches and office buildings are supposed to look like” (martin, F.D., & Jacobus, L.A., 2018) When we approach a piece of art, it is important to have an open mind. Everything may not be as it seems. There are often deeper meanings or messages that are hidden beneath the surface. And sometimes artwork doesn’t have just one meaning. It could represent many different ideas or thoughts. It could also have no specific meaning, and just simply be open for interpretation by the person looking at it.

One specific example I consider a work of art is the simple American Flag. While the flag is simply just a piece of fabric with a pattern design, the flags deeper meaning is what makes it art. The three colors that make up the flag along with the 13 strips and the 50 stars all have different meanings. But if you asked every American what that flag represents, you will get a long list of different responses. To me, it represents the freedoms that we have in America. It also represents all those in uniform who fight for our freedoms. And I am very honored to wear the flag on my sleeve when I go to work every day.

How does lines, colors, and texture represent my definition. Again, it’s all on what the flag represents. The Red, White, and Blue representing Courage and valor, Purity, and vigilance, perseverance, and justice. The 13 stripes for the 13 original colonies. The 50 stars for the 50 states. All of these things represent the flag’s symbolism and everything it stand for.
