Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of caffeine on reaction time. Eight college students performed 10 trials of a simple color change reaction time test. Then four of the participants ingested more than 65 mg of caffeine from drinks, and the other four participants had non-caffeine drinks. The participants took another 10 trials of color change reaction test again 30-45 minutes after drinking caffeine or non-caffeine drinks. No difference between mean pre-test reaction time for caffeine (343.5 ms) and non-caffeine (343 ms). Mean post-test caffeine (317.75 ms) reaction time decrease more than non-caffeine post-test (337 ms). Two-way ANOVA with repetition was used to compare condition factors (caffeine vs. non-caffeine) and practice (pre-test vs. post-test). The result showed there were no main effect of caffeine condition or practice, apparent interaction between caffeine and practice was not significant (F(1,12) = .07, ns (p=.80)). In summary, the reaction time do not appear to be influenced by caffeine vs. non-caffeine.
