2. The Assignment: Create a five -minute video response to the film. YOU SHOULD NOT EXCEED FIVE MINUTES.

3. The Outline: You must submit a speaking outline to Canvas to complete this assignment and receive a grade. Please submit the outline to the specified places in the Module.

You must directly quote the film at least three times and once from one of my lectures related to the film and oral presentation. Begin the quotes with a signal phrase. For the film give speaker and scene:

When Chris is in the museum with Nola, he says “…….”

In the scene where Chris interviewed by the police he defends himself when he cries out, “………”

In the final scene in the apartment, Chloe asks Chris, “….”

Use a signal phrase when quoting my lectures as well.

4. This video will be available for viewing to other members of the class. This is a formal academic assignment. Consider this as an oral presentation similar to how you would present in class.

Rehearse, and make eye contact with the camera in your computer during the recording. DO NOT READ YOUR PRESENTATION. Your presentation should flow from one idea to the next. You may glance at your outline, but return to the camera. Your audience is the camera; speak right to it.

Lastly, remember what I am seeing. Consider the background in the video. Do not have your dog running around behind you and barking. Try to get the camera as level as possible to your eyes so I do not have to look up your nostrils the entire time. You don’t have to dress up, but dress how you would if you were presenting this in class. FOLLOW YOUROUTLINE AND REHEARSE! PLEASE JUST DON’T RAMBLE ON.

It is easy to see Black Swan as simply as a horror story or how a bad mother drives her daughter crazy. However, it is more than that. Remember it ends with Nina saying, “I wasperfect.”

Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy is very relevant to Black Swan as a modern tragedy. As you recall from my lecture, Nietzsche saw in ancient Greek tragedy a collision of sorts between aspects of Greek culture that were echoed in the characters in the tragedy itself. He labels them the Dionysian and Apollonian in reference to the two Greek gods Dionysius and Apollo. The Dionysian stemmed from the original festivals during primitive times in Greece. Dionysius was the god of fertility, passion, frenzy, irrationality and creativity. Apollo was connected to later forms of civilized culture and represented control, order, logic, but also perfection in form and art. Nietzsche believed these impulses or “instincts,” as Freud might say, are part of the human mind and behavior.

A collision of the Apollonian and Dionysian produced the great Greek tragedies since the characters in those dramasoften expressed both of these impulses. This led to conflict in the drama – play or movie- and in lives of the charactersin that work of art. Simply, the Dionysian conflicting with the Apollonian is what happens to the characters. It is often visible internally [psychologically] in their minds. This can lead to disaster and death; hence, tragedy.

Topic: As you watch the film, see how this struggle between the Apollonian and Dionysian occurs in the main character – Nina Sayers. How does she change throughout the film? How do you know? Lastly, think of this as a struggle between the Apollonian and Dionysian for Nina on several levels: in her dancing; in her relationships with others and within her own mind.

Look carefully at the other characters in her life. Do they represent the Apollonian or Dionysian or both in the same character? How? How do they influence the main character? How do they change her?

Finally, at the very end of the movie she says, “ I was perfect.” Was she? Why? Was she not? Why?

This really forms the topic for your oral presentation in the course, so please watch carefully and take notes. You will need details for the essay.
