Humanities Homework Help. Headlines, Leads, Paraphrasing, and Editing
A headline that is clear and specific will tell the readers what a story is about and allow them to decide whether or not to delve more deeply into the newspaper, magazine, or website. A general or vague headline will confuse readers and they may end up wasting their time.
Good headlines are not easy to write. they take a great deal of skill, understanding, and practice on the part of the writer.
Headlines are abstracted sentences–five to 10 words at most–that convey a complete thought. That is, they must contain a subject and a verb, better yet, a subject, verb, and object. For example:
President threatens veto of new tax bill
Smith throws one-hitter as Tigers get key win
