The history of America throughout its existence has always been changing, however there have been certain common themes that have played a role through its entirety. The period from the 1990s to the present have some common themes from the past as well. One of the first ones that I noticed was the fight for freedoms for minorities and also opposition to those minorities. Some americans believed in Multiculturalism and supported immigration, while others opposed it. Many Americans also fought for things such as gay marriage, which received support in the Obergfell vs. Hodges court case. In more recent affairs, things like Obamacare also reflect similar legislation and ideoligies as seen in the New Deal from the Progressivist movement; on the other hand, Trump’s call to “Repeal and Replace” Obamacare echoes the call for less government intervention as seen in the 1920s and 1980s. By understanding the long-term history of the US, we are more readily enabled to see common themes and patterns of our current day and time. By reflecting on these events in the past and looking at the corresponding outcome, we can make better decisions on choices like what to fight for or who to vote for, which are key things in keeping the democracy that we have in America alive and well.
