Written Length – 5 pages, 1600 to 1800 words . You will research and compile information on a style or genre of music and its
relationship to a culture or subculture. You will use four reliable sources* to support your
ideas, and you will cite them. You will give a 5- to 6-minute presentation in class about your
project as well as submit the written paper to Sakai. For your presentation, you will share a
very brief musical excerpt and a related art object from another artistic discipline.
Instructions: Sara Cohen defines music ethnography as an approach that “should focus upon
social relationships, emphasizing music as social practice and process” (123). Select a style of
music within a culture or subculture that you are interested in researching. Find out as much as
you can about the music, who creates it, how people listen to it, what the listeners have in
common, and how the music contributes to or defines that culture, and especially how it
creates or encourages social interactions. How is the identity of the people embodied?
Musical and Artistic Analysis: As part of the ethnography, identify a piece of music that clearly
embodies the characteristics you are writing about. You will create a brief descriptive analysis
of the music, using the language of elements and principles discussed in your World Music
course, demonstrating how this piece fits into a larger body of works. In addition, you will
identify one additional art object that is related or connected to this music – a painting, a poem,
a ceremonial mask, a video clip of a dance, etc. State briefly in your analysis how this additional
artwork represents the musical genre and the culture. Both the music and the related art
object art to be part of your ethnography presentation in class. Also, an electronic link to
these must also be present in your paper you submit.
Audience: Imagine that you are writing this ethnography for a popular national or international
magazine that focuses on a particular region or group of people and the associated culture(s).
Assessment: I will be looking for specific evidence from reliable, appropriate sources to
support your ideas. I will also be looking for thoughtful analysis and original perspective.
