Performance Critique/Play Analysis: Under normal circumstances, students are required to see a live performance of a play, and write a critique. The critique must reflect your understanding of the value of criticism when specific criteria are followed. We will learn that a critique has a great deal of power when it comes to a play’s success, both artistically and financially. Let’s not forget the reputation and egos of the director and actors. In better times, I would send you out to find a live performance this semester. Find a play. Videos of live performance of plays are available on YouTube, Netflix, Broadwayworld.com, and many others. Your challenge is to watch the performance. Your starting point will be the play, the written text. You must find a copy of the play and read it. You must be able to discuss, plot, character, thought, diction, music, and spectacle. (More about this soon.) Then you consider the performance. The direction, acting, costuming, lighting, and all the rest. The paper should be five pages.
