Business Finance Homework Help. COM 207 ASU Communication Privacy Management Theory Literature Review

This is my brief take from earlier in the semester

Social penetration theory and communication privacy management theory have been selected from the previewed brief lecture. Social penetration theory attempts to elaborate the role of information sharing in the advancement and dissolution of interpersonal relationships. On the other side, communication management theory is a research theory created to develop evidence-based apprehension about how individuals make decisions concerning revealing and concealing private information. The assumptions associated with the two theories, the topics predicted, and their influence on communication are among the factors discussed herein.

Primary Assumptions

Social penetration theory assumes that the levels of relationships are organized metaphorically as an onion. Also, using the onion analogy assumes that the outer layer serves as the least intimate relationship and the inner core as the strong intimate relationship. Further, it assumes that for a relationship to advance, there must be an information exchange (Carpenter & Greene, 2015). Additionally, it assumes that self-disclosure passes through orientation, exploratory exchange, affective exchange, and stable exchange as the main stages. On the other hand, communication privacy management theory assumes that people maintain and coordinate privacy limits with communication partners depending on the benefit and costs of information disclosure.

Topics explained

Communication privacy theory focus on the topic of relationship individuals have with each other in the communicative setting. The theory demonstrates that privacy is not paradoxical rather sustainable via privacy management structure embraced every day. Additionally, it incorporates the privacy rights and personal beliefs held by individuals. Besides, social penetration theory explains the topic of relationship development and progress. The theory postulates how communication enhances the relationship between two or more people.

Reasons for choosing the two theories

The two theories have been selected due to their detailed insights on communication issues and their impact on peoples’ relationships. The need to apprehend the role of communication in relationships and factors resulting in information privacy propelled me to choose these theories. Social penetration theory suggests that information exchange depends on the closeness between the two partners. Closeness or penetration enhances increased information exchange which results in understanding the other partner’s inner self (Petronio, 2017). On the other hand, the issue of information privacy interested me in communication privacy management. Also, the rule-based management criteria control the level of accessing personal information that involves co-owners of private information.

Moreover, the ways embraced in categorizing information as private, privacy rights, and boundaries attracted my attention to this theory because the consumer examines the decision of sharing such information, co-owning, and disseminating. Notably, information exchange concepts and their effect on individual relationships as posted in social penetration theory and information privacy as suggested in communication privacy management affect personal relationships in our daily lives. Also, the issues affect relationships in organizations, thus propels to carry out additional research in the future to determine their impact on communication.
