1) First Part: 

   An old friend of mine, Jeff, works as a cabinet maker for a company that services high-end clients.  The kitchens, closets, bathrooms, etc. they install are ridiculously priced.  One morning last fall or so, he was sent to a private residence in a high-rise on the Gold Coast, Chicago.  Upon entering the residence, the butler (yes–the butler) told him that in order to enter the residence and complete his job, he’d be required to submit a photocopy of his driver’s license for storage in the homeowner’s private, permanent records. 

Before I offer any further details, I want to ask you a simple question: were you to be in Jeff’s position, would you agree to turn over your license for photocopying and storage?  Why / not? *  Don’t just spit out a quick yes or no–that knee-jerk reaction of yours, “I’d never do that, and I’d tell the butler to go f . . .” isn’t reality–it’s an ideal.  So, instead, sink in with me here a bit, and consider your life, your beliefs, your circumstances, and dig in. 

2) Second Part:  

Come up with a list of 4 or 5 potential project topics, and post them here. (You have freedom here, freedom to choose a topic from whatever your head, heart, or hands might fancy.  So what might that be?  About what are you curious?  What do you geek out over but never had the chance to dig into? What is a huge issue in your life that is quietly (or otherwise) taking a backseat to seemingly more pressing matters?) (Just 5 topics in a question form, for example: “Can happiness be a product?”/ “What does it mean to live a good life?/Where do you find meaning in your life?”)
