In the book, Dr. Smith becomes John’s advocate. What do you think the role of advocacy is in society? How does social justice fit in? After reading comments from the attached website and watching Crip Camp comment on society’s role as an advocate.

Discussion Board Reflection

The first step in writing your final theme paper should be to read your peer’s posts on the various themes addressed in our discussion boards.

Next, you should do some additional research on the theme or themes you want to address in your paper.

Finally, write a 3-5 page paper outlining the themes you are your peers have discovered. This is a draft paper but should be supported by research

as well as supported by the text/debate discussions. I have attached the rubric that will be used to grade the paper,

so it would be advisable to look over the rubric prior to writing your paper.

ISI book questions

Under what circumstances does John become invisible?

What does it mean to be “not a drooler.” How does this explain the definition of mental retardation?

What does it mean, “As men grow more civilized…a complex mutual dependence becomes the universal rule?”

What is the ethical implication of James Watson’s paper Looking Forward? Which side of the debate are you on and why?

What was the underlying cause of John’s physical outbursts?

What was Darwin’s personal dilemma? What might have happened had he wrote his book after he faced this dilemma?

Who were Eldridge Cleaver and Floyd Cochran and how did their personal experiences change their worldview? What might the world be like if there were no “defective” individuals?

John was featured in a newspaper article. What effect did that have on John?

What happened when Dr. Smith moved to South Carolina?

What did Dr. Smith conclude about his impact on John’s life?

You should read over these book questions and answer them throughout the class. They are due the first week of June

but you do not want to wait until that week to finish them as you will also have a paper due that week.

Rights

Rights of the disabled

There are universal human rights and rights within the country where you live. You are to chose one of the two options below and add to the debate.

Option I:

After reading the articles from the Advocacy web-debate (Canada), read the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. Many persons with disabilities feel that their basic human rights are often violated. Look through these rights and make a case regarding possible violations of human rights. This declaration was written in 1948, why might the date of this be important? What social implications may block someone from being afforded these rights?

Option 2:

It has been 30 years since the passing of the American Disabilities Act. Regarded as the most comprehensive legislation protecting the rights of the disabled. Recently Congress has tried to pull back on some of those protections in order to help businesses. Read about both sides of the debate and take a side. I also put in an interesting piece related to COVID-19 and how persons with disabilities may be struggling more than others.
