2 part assignment on Makerspaces in the classroom

This assignment is designed for students to explore how Makerspaces can bring the E (engineering) into early education classrooms. This assignment is divided into two parts and requires the following:

Part I: Written Section (10 points)

●      State the age(s)/grade(s) of the classroom for which the makerspace is designed

The age that I want this to be used for is grade 3-5

●      Define makerspace and how it connects to STEM education (remember to cite sources)

●      Using the Heroman text, find six design challenges that you might use in your classroom.

I will attach the 6 design challenges for you shortly

○      Make a list of materials your makerspace needs for all six designs. Are there additional materials that you will include that will aid children in their design not listed by Heroman? If so, why are you adding these materials? These materials will be placed in the makerspace you design in Part II

●      Write a letter to parents/guardians explaining the makerspace and asking if they can donate materials. Remember to, consider the diversity represented by your families: cultural, ethinic, language, economic, racial, and so forth. In other words, be culturally responsive and sensitive to your families.

Part II: Designing a Makerspace Section (15 points)

Design an indoor makerspace using Jamboard, Google Draw, or another drawing app that you can share. What to consider when you design the makerspace?

●      Make sure the makerspace is age appropriate

●      Where will the makerspace be placed in your classroom? Will this be a dedicated space or shared for some other purpose? This needs to be reflected in your makerspace design

●      How will the makerspace materials be stored? Storage is part of the makerspace design.

●      What about a table?

●      How much “floor” space? Remember, you do not have unlimited space

●      Make a list of materials you will place in your Makerspace – don’t forget materials can be natural! How many materials is up to you and how large a space you are designing. I suggest a range of 20 – 30 materials including the materials from the six designs you selected in Part I

●      Will you include any digital technology?
