Science Homework Help. Chemistry, Writing after reading

Checkpoint 2: Science Literacy Project Reading Log

Below are sections of a reading log that will help you preparing your class presentation. Please fill out all sections and provide citations from the book or from another source where necessary. Complete each section with enough detail to be useful.

Personal Connection (1 point)

What book did you choose (title, author). After completing the book, how do you relate to the work or the people described? What were your emotions upon finishing the book: hopeful, defeated, inspired? Be candid!

Favorite Quotes (1 point)

I hope you are enjoying the book you selected. I also hope it was well written and engaged you to keep you reading. I always like to hold on to quotes from books that teach me lessons. Cite at least one more of your favorite quotes from the later parts of the book. Cite the page in your book on which the quote is found. You can totally cite more but I want one more!!! Following the quote, tell me why this sentiment resonated with you.

Bring the numbers (2 points)

I am reasonably certain that every book in our list cites some type of data (such as a percentage, an average, or a rate). Some books have a lot more data/numbers than others! I want you to put at least one quantitative (with numbers) detail from your book that really caused you to think/challenge your own assumptions in the space below. What details were provided about how this data was collected (who, what, when, where, how)? How much variability do you think there is in these measured values? What aspects or variables of the research could have been/should have been explored? I would like at least one piece of data with any details about how it was collected (2 points) and a connection to your own impressions and assumptions (2 points). If only qualitative (nonnumerical) findings are described, identify them as qualitative and connect it to your own experience. Answer this in 50 words or more.

Class Connections (4 points)

Ideally you are seeing some connections between your interests in this topic, the performance of research in general, chemistry concepts specifically or have made you consider the ethical implications of the work described. Cite two ways that content of your book relates to you about the conduct of research, personal struggles in science, specific chemistry concepts, or ethical concerns that you have been exploring in CHEM 120 this semester. Make a connection between the later content of the book and the concepts from the class (2 points) in 50 words or more.

Coolest Things (4 points)

You should be about half way through with your book by now. What are two things this book taught you in the later chapters? These lessons could be about anything from the practice of science, about the science itself, about the impacts of science on the formation of policy, the life of scientists and those who write about them. CITE PAGES IN THE TEXT where these insights are mentioned and tell me in a sentence or two why this was really a takeaway lesson for you (2 points each). Answer this in 50 words or more.

Reach Beyond (5 points)

A curious person will never stop at a single source. I wanted you to read these books in an effort to peak your interest and elaborate your knowledge of a topic and dig deeper into it. What is one thing in this book that you want to know more about? FIND ANOTHER SOURCE of information about this topic. This can be:

a. An article in one of the following periodicals (NY Times, SF Chronicle, Time Magazine, The Economist, Popular Science, Popular Engineering, Wired, or National Geographic);

b. A documentary film;

c. Another book with more information on this subject;

d. Or a journal article from a peer-reviewed publication.

It is TOTALLY FINE to seek out the primary resources on this topic that are cited by the author of your book! (2 points)

CITE THE OTHER SOURCE

Briefly describe new aspects of this idea or concept that you learned from this second source. How does the information in the second source relate to the topics described in the first source? (3 points)
