Take two straws, labeling one Straw1 and the other, Straw2. Avoid rubbing either at the beginning. Take a piece of the toilet paper and tear it into small strands scattered on the lab table top or desk. Let Straw1 be your primary tool for the electrostatic experiment.

(1) (a) Bring Straw1 (unrubbed) near Straw2 (unrubbed), slowly, until they touch. Write summary of your observation in figure 1 and the detailed in your notebook. (b) Repeat for the turn strands of toilet paper (TPS), and then (c) for the narrow stream of water from the faucet.

(2) Now rub Straw1 vigorously using folded sheet of toilet paper. Position the ruler vertically near the TPS with the 0 mm mark at the lower end. Bring the rubbed surface of Straw1 by the side of the ruler close to the TPS, slowly. Measure the initial distance (d1) at which the TPS starts responding to Straw1 and the distance (d2) at which the pull is much stronger. Record your measurement and observation in figure 1d. Rub Straw1 again and bring it close to a TPS on top of another. Write your observation.
