What Is Blind Contour?

The Blind Contour video will show you the basic approach needed to complete Exercise #1. Though a small potted plant is used as the subject matter, you have the option of drawing one of your hands instead. Drawing one’s hand is a relatively common subject for the assignment. A true blind contour drawing means you do not look at the paper or you do not lift your pencil up once you start. It should be a continuous line that follows the exterior outlines of the object’s shape. Lastly, the final rendering of the object may look distorted and out of scale/proportion. It is not meant to look realistic. You are working on improving your eye-hand coordination by seeing and feeling all the nuances of how outlines describe shapes.

Materials/Supplies

  • 18” x 24” Newsprint Pad/Drawing Board
  • 2B Drawing Pencil
  • Eraser (white plastic or kneaded)
  • Pencil Sharpener

Instructions

  • Remove one sheet of paper from your newsprint pad.
    • Be careful not to tear the paper unevenly as you remove it from the pad.
    • The sheets are attached to the pads with an adhesive binding that can make it difficult to pull the sheets off cleanly. I suggest pulling the sheet slowly and carefully from the adhesive binding.
  • Attach one sheet to your drawing board for the first exercise and follow the instructions below to create a sheet of Blind Contour drawing.
  • Create two Blind Contour drawings of either one of your hands in different positions or a potted plant on one sheet of paper.
    • Draw at least two different views of the object(s) you choose
    • Try to render them life-size, whether it’s a small plant or your hand.
    • Both drawings should be on one side of the newsprint paper (do not use the back.)
    • It is ok if parts of the two drawings overlap.
    • Draw for 1-2 minutes without lifting the pencil or looking at the paper

Submission Instructions

  • Take a photo of the drawing with an 18-inch ruler
    • The ruler should be next to the outside of any side of your painting with the numbers visible. Do not place the ruler within the artwork.
  • Upload and Submit the photo to the assignment
    • Click on Attach
    • Click on Choose File
    • Locate and Open your photo
