Natives and Europeans – Inevitable Conflict?

We know from our reading and the videos that the Spanish explorers and settlers, as well as English settlers/colonists in Virginia and New England, New France and New Amsterdam had violent encounters with the Indians, but that there were also times and circumstances when they coexisted and even interacted to mutual benefit, such as engaging in the fur trade. Do you think that conflict between the Europeans and native peoples was inevitable? Why or Why not? Discuss specific historical circumstances that provided possibilities for peaceful interaction, as well as ones that led to tension and conflict.
