Persuasive Speech Guidelines

The format for this speech will be more like a roundtable discussion instead of a formal presentation. There is no PowerPoint requirement and the outline will be less involved than the informative speech outline (example to follow). You will speak for four to five minutes, followed by a one to two-minute question and answer session. When it is your turn to present, you will enable your camera and microphone and the floor will be yours.

Always keep the pillars of persuasion in mind: ethos, pathos, logos. Is your source credible? What is their motivation for their research/argument? Is the work/research supported by other well-informed sources? Regarding your emotional appeals, are they valid? Do not rely solely on negative pathos; too much doom and gloom can be counterproductive. When it comes to logical appeals, research including data, statistics and facts certainly qualify, but that is not the end of logos. Does the idea or argument make sense from the audience’s point of view? Keep in mind that your POV may differ from the POV of your audience (in favor, opposed, neutral or apathetic).

It is critical to research prevailing counterarguments against your position; you should research the other side as well as your own. You need three sources for this presentation, no more than five. Be very careful of source bias: FOX, MSNBC, CNN, Brietbart, HuffPost, etc. I am not suggesting you must avoid (might not be a bad idea though) these ‘sources,’ but you must view all content through the lens of their potential bias. I strongly suggest sticking with academic, non-partisan source material; we will discuss this during class.

Your grade will be determined through three equal facets: delivery (eye contact/tone), strength/validity of sources and application of persuasive principles.
