Assignment Overview

The purpose of an informative speech is to convey original thinking and understanding to the audience in an organized and memorable fashion and to educate your audience on a specific topic. Your task is to share information with your audience about a topic. The goal of this speech is to communication knowledge and therefore teaches your audience something.

For this assignment, you will prepare and deliver an organized informative speech. Remember, an informative speech will either define or explain a concept or situation, describe a person, place, object or event, or explain a process.

The topic of your speech should be something that matters to the general public but more importantly matter to you! Choose a topic that is interesting, insightful, and/or impactful. It can be useful or useless information pertaining to activities, people, food, movies, music, experiences, etc. This assignment was designed for you to discuss a topic of your choosing with passion and the pure intent of informing your audience from a neutral position.

Your topic should be something the audience maybe unfamiliar with specifics, yet intelligent to understand. Topic selection for the informative speech is very important and should be of interest to you and has the potential to interest your audience. Even though you are delivering your speech virtually, you still need to be audience centered in your delivery.

Delivery

1. This speech will be between 5-6 minutes in length.
   1. You will be muted at 6:15.
   2. If you do not meet the 5 minute time requirement, you will automatically receive a 10% deduction on your overall grade for the oral portion of the speech.
2. You must have a minimum of six sources. You should use a variety of academic sources, such as books and academic journal articles; you are limited to three online sources. These sources must be orally cited during your speech.

You must have a visual aid that is easy to understand, interesting to look at, and enhances your presentation. You may use screen share, but you are limited to one slide/graph/picture/etc.

Outline

The purpose of a formal speech outline is to provide enough detail to understand the basic organizational structure of the speech, not a word-for-word manuscript of your speech. Formal outlines must adhere to a consistent format and symbols to structure and organize your ideas. Outlines written in paragraph/manuscript form or that use multiple sentences for each level of detail will lose points.

Speech Outline Assignment Requirements

• Use Informative Speech Outline template!
• Your outline must include the following heading/sections: Introduction, Body, and Conclusion.
• Your outline must meet I-A and each main/sub point needs to be written as one complete sentence.
• You must include in-text citations within your outline along with a corresponding reference following APA style guidelines on a separate reference page.
• You must include a separate reference page for your six required citations. Each reference, formatted according to the APA style guidelines
