1) Woodside and McClam (2019) note that working in human services field such as social work can be challenging and rewarding, but can also be stressful, deadline-driven, full of pressure, and sometimes even toxic to one’s sense of balance and harmony.  The authors go on to note that one reaction to stress is encapsulation, which they define as “retreating from the engagement of helping and becoming rigid, insensitive, uncaring professionals” (p. 241).  The authors also note that another reaction to stress is burnout, a condition that may result in poor work performance or even possibly quitting social work as a career.

2) Consider these points as you create a post to the discussion board that answers the following questions.  Each question that is answered will be worth up to 5 points:

  • As a social work professional, what types of activities will you engage in to manage job stress, burnout, and encapsulation?
