Discussion 1- workshop

THURSDAY by 11:59 PM: Please post a revised and polished body paragraph here for workshop. (1)

SUNDAY by 11:59 PM: For two different classmates, answer the following questions in full (please choose classmates that have not yet been reviewed whenever possible):

1. Look back at your writing frame. What, if anything, is missing? (Topic Sentence, Reasoning, Evidence, Explanation of the Evidence, Counter Argument (optional), Counter to that Counter (optional), Concluding Sentence).

2. Is each of these EFFECTIVE? That is, does the topic sentence make sense, and does the support (reasoning and evidence) for that topic sentence also connect clearly? Be wary of related, but not directly supporting, reasoning and evidence.

3. Are each of the sentences phrased as CONCISELY, and CLEARLY as possible? Hint: Read them OUT LOUD. Remember Write Out Loud (on campus) and Natural Reader (off campus) as possible software solutions to help find awkward and/or unclear phrasing.

4. Does the author document in text citations correctly? Has the author used the source effectively? (does the quote prove the topic sentence?)

Remember, whatever is happening in this paragraph is likely happening in your other paragraphs, so if you get feedback for this one that is helpful, be sure to apply it to your others!

______________________________________ Discussion 2- online communication (solitude , empathy, and connectioned communication)

Please read and annotate Turkle’s Reclaiming Conversation, “One Chair: Solitude and Self Reflection” before attempting this week’s discussion.

THURSDAY by 11:59 PM: Briefly summarize both “Solitude” and “Self Reflection” (1 paragraph each, total of two paragraphs in summary) and then answer the following questions. Be sure to ground your discussion in your reading, referencing quotes from the text in MLA format:

NOTE: FOR FULL CREDIT ON THIS WEEK’S DISCUSSION: make a grounded/strong connection between what you are reading and another text we have read this term. Make sure both textual quotes are cited within your response.

1. Is solitude essential? Why/why not? What are the effects of technology on solitude? Do you agree with our author? Why/why not?

2. What are the effects of technology on empathy? Do you agree with our author? Why/why not? What solutions can you offer/see, if any?

3. Is self reflection necessary? What is the purpose? What are the effects of technology on self reflection? What solutions are offered, and how realistic are they?

SUNDAY by 11:59 PM: Respond to a minimum of two classmates in at least a one paragraph response. Make sure that you are going beyond simply agreeing with them, but rather, building upon what they have said in some way. You might accomplish this by connecting what they have said to personal experiences of your own/thoughts of your own and/or text from any of your reading this term (make sure to document in MLA). Point out connections that you see.
_______________________________________ Assignment 1- Body Paragraph and Conclusion

Submit your polished and revised Body Paragraphs and conclusion done to the best of your ability.

______________________________________ Assignment 2 –

Please read and answer the questions within the reading for your own essay (you may want two windows open for this exercise):

STEPS TO REVISION

Find your main point. Restate your thesis.

What are you trying to say in the paper? In other words, try to summarize your thesis, or main point, and the evidence you are using to support that point. Try to imagine that this paper belongs to someone else.

Does the paper have a clear thesis? Do readers know what the paper is going to be about and the specific points you will make after reading the introduction?

Identify your readers and your purpose.

What are you trying to do in the paper? In other words, are you trying to argue with the reading, to analyze the reading, to evaluate the reading, to apply the reading to another situation, or to accomplish another goal?

Evaluate your evidence.

Does the body of your paper support your thesis? (Do your main points directly support your thesis?

Do you offer enough evidence to support your claim?

In using quotations from the text as evidence, did you cite them properly?

Save only the good pieces.

Do all of the ideas relate back to the thesis? Is there anything that doesn’t seem to fit? If so, you either need to change your thesis to reflect the idea or cut the idea. What parts can you eliminate?

Tighten and clean up your language.

Do all of the ideas in the paper make sense? Are there unclear or confusing ideas or sentences? Read your paper out loud and listen for awkward pauses and unclear ideas. Cut out extra words, vagueness, and misused words.

Eliminate mistakes in grammar and usage.

Do you see any problems with grammar, punctuation, or spelling? If you think something is wrong, you should make a note of it, even if you don’t know how to fix it. You can always talk to a Writing Lab tutor about how to correct errors.

Switch from writer-centered to reader-centered. (This section should be several paragraphs in length/response. Make sure you are addressing all parts of this question in your response).

Try to detach yourself from what you’ve written; pretend that you are reviewing someone else’s work. What would you say is the most successful part of your paper? Why? How could this part be made even better? What would you say is the least successful part of your paper? Why? How could this part be improved?
