Non-verbal communication can completely change the meaning of words being spoken by gestures such as body language and facial expressions. For instance, if a pair of siblings are having a heated dispute and their parent intervenes and says “apologize to your brother/sister”, in the heat of the moment the siblings do not wish to get into further trouble with their parent so they will most likely say “sorry.” but if their face is still showing upsetting or an angry expression, or their body language is still tense, it changes the value of the apology, making it seem insincere and unapologetic, as opposed to if they were genuinely apologetic and wanting to end the conflict without their parent or guardian present to force the act of apology,

The risk of miscommunication in using electronic sources is a very popular topic, texting is my favorite one. Texting is a tricky thing, as a person can type a message, but it’s difficult to understand how the one who sent the message meant to portray their words. For example, if someone you are texting has an opinion of something you’ve done, and tells you in a text ” I didn’t like how you went about this that way”, the one on the receiving end may not know how to respond, they could read it in an angry voice, causing them frustration, or they could read it in a calm voice and have a grown up talk, handling the situation accordingly. Detecting the emotion behind messages can be a difficult task, and causes miscommunication all the time.

Week 2 Discussion 2

Discuss ways in which nonverbal communication, i.e., tone of voice, demeanor, gestures, age, race, gender, and social class, can completely change the meaning of the words being spoken. What is the risk of miscommunication in using electronic sources?

Reading the textbook materials, I discuss how nonverbal communication learned that “Nonverbal communication (communication without the use of words) is the basic, primitive form of conveying information from one person to another (Levine, 2013).” There are many different ways to show nonverbal messages. Other ways are tone of voice, facial expression, silence, gestures and movements, physical appearance, body sounds, demeanor, environment, and touch. “It has been estimated that in normal communications between two people, only one-third of the meaning is transmitted verbally, and nearly two-thirds are transmitted nonverbally (Levine, 2013).” “Nonverbal communication is used when individuals do not possess a command of a language (Levine,2013).” These nonverbal communication actions can change the meaning of the words being spoken drastically. For example, if you said hi to your client, but your facial expression showed how irritated you were, your client would feel that you didn’t want to be bothered with whatever the situation is that they are there for because of the facial expression that you have made. That is why you need to have your facial expressions match your tone to avoid offending anybody. Most importantly, when you are with your client, customer, or patient, be sure always to greet them with a great tone and a smile.

A person using their body language reinforces what a person is saying contradicts it. I can say one thing, but my body language can say something else. An example of this is a child not being able to use his words to speech impairment. The child uses gestures or pointing.

Most communication daily and various platforms nowadays. We send emails, and we text each other; miscommunication can occur. Because if I send an email, it can be detrimental if this was an emergency and help was needed right away. When sending emails, inputting the wrong information or time can happen. An example would send out invites by email and putting the wrong time. The outcome could be people showing up at 3:00 instead of six o’clock.
