A predictive maintenance engineer of Muscat Energy company has conducted a vibration monitoring in the turbine-generator single reduction gear which is attached in the energy distribution mechanism as shown in Figure B. The pinion(small gear) is located at the turbine side, and the gear ratio is 0.8. The specifications of bearing located at the turbine side is provided in Table B2, and specifications of pinion-gear set is given in Table B3. After the conduct of vibration monitoring, the overall vibration reading, and the spectral analysis or FFT results have shown concern to the predictive maintenance engineer. A number of frequencies are peaking in the FFT spectrum. Table B1 shows the following frequencies that are peaking excessively at high level.

(i) Identify each of the peaking frequency, and its associated fault;

(ii) Critically evaluate the condition of the bearing, and provide a neat sketch of the FFT spectrum;

(iii) Determine the gear mesh frequency, first and second harmonics with sidebands;

(iv) Discuss and sketch possible FFT spectrum that shows gear tooth damage if there is a gear tooth damage.

(v) Discuss the different criteria in determining bearing, and gear faults.
