I chose to write about number 5, schedule staff according to sales. When I did seasonal work in the mall, management always had a little bit of an issue doing this. During the holiday season, the store would be flooded with customers all the time. Our manager did a good job scheduling enough employees to be on the floor. The issue came after the holidays. The store would be empty and there would be 5 or 6 of us standing around doing nothing. Majority of the time, management would only send home one person or no one at all.

I didn’t realize how big of an issue this was until I took this class and learned about controlling labor cost. Even though we just had good sales, we were still wasting money. It was helping the employees while hurting the store. During the other months of the year, our sales weren’t always where our GM wanted them to be. If we know that our sales decrease for a few weeks after holidays, we shouldn’t have several employees scheduled to come in every day. Limiting the number of employees on the clock when we’re slow should’ve been discussed more between our management. The repercussions for keeping unneeded employees on the clock should’ve also been discussed between the employees and managers.
