1. Jonathan Culler states that “a theory must be more than a hypothesis: it can’t be obvious; it involves complex relations of a systematic kind among a number of factors; and is not easily confirmed or disproved” (3).  For this week’s discussion forum, then, I want you to do three things.

1) find another statement about what theory is in either Culler or the readings from hooks or de Man and compare that statement of what theory is or does with the quote I’ve given above from Culler.

2) discuss what kinds of theories fit under the definition given above, and/or under the alternate definition you found in the readings.

3) discuss briefly when we might use such theories, or such kinds of theorizing.
