Serial Killer: Jeffrey Dahmer
This is the WEEK 1 work that is needed
What interested me about Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer’s case was the methods he used to commit his hideous crimes. Based on my preliminary research, Dahmer was suffering from necrophilia. Necrophilia is a mental disorder where an individual has a sexual attraction to corpses (Bartol & Bartol, 2017). According to Bartol & Bartol (2017), some of the signs and symptoms of necrophilia include the inability to form relations with the living, insensitivity to life tragedies especially those involving life, interest in death, embracing devices or techniques of destruction, interested in mutilating small creatures and socially withdrawn. At very tender age Dahmer exhibited some necrophilia symptoms such as fascination on stories of death, antisocial behavior, was sexually inept, and having sexual intercourse with dead animals.
According to Bartol & Bartol (2017), emotional challenges if left unchecked causes severe mental disorder. According to Bartol & Bartol (2017) mental disorder develops from abnormal behavior and during Dahmer’s adolescent years he had undergone a lot of emotional challenges that left him out of control of his mental state because he did not receive proper parental care. Based on the mental state of Dahmer, he was under emotional pressure, and this made him a psychopath because he was obsessed with the abnormal. At the time when Dahmer was committing all the 16 cases of suicide, he was still experiencing emotional instability, and this made him lose control of his actions. On the question of competence, Dahmer had the ability to make decisions, and yet each time he was compromised by his unstable mental state. Insanity is another issue in the case because Dahmer could not differentiate between reality and fantasy (Andrews & James, 2014). For instance, Dahmer could claim that he had an impulsive behavior and so he could plead not guilty for reason of insanity. Necrophilia is a rare mental disorder, and the issues of insanity, psychopathy, and competence are critical to Dahmer’s case.
