The school system developed as an appropriate separate place
for children: an arena where they could be apart from adults, but also where
they could be disciplined and guided. This often resulted in very harsh
punishments, sometimes to the point of being cruel. Compulsory education was
introduced in 1880 (Heywood 2001), and this contributed to the marginalization

school instead of work. Education not only segregated children from world of
adults but also led to the economic dependency of children.
