The current fashion for conductive education has created a
furore in the world of education . . . We have seen the creation of three new
organisations aimed at furthering it, television programmes extolling its
virtues, demonstrations at the House of Commons, picketing of the Spastics
Society . . . it claims to be a method of enabling the motor impaired ‘to
function in society without requiring special apparatus such as wheelchairs,
ramps or other artificial aids’. Well yes, but don’t we all use artificial aids
of one kind or another: try eating your dinner without a knife or fork or going
to Australia without an aeroplane . . .
