Biblical Interpretation Paper – 40 points

Basic Christian Beliefs, Dr. Kim Seiberling

You should only need your passage out of the Bible and this hand out.  DO NOT DO ANY RESEARCH.  DO NOT LOOK YOUR PASSAGE UP ON THE INTERNET.             We will do research ONLY in the next part of the paper.  Evidence of this will result in deductions on this half of the paper.  Just follow this sheet question by question.  You may type out the questions.  The paper should be in complete sentences.  DO not use bullet points. The total paper should be 5.5-11 pages.  (THIS MUST FOLLOW THE SECTION MINIMUM AND MAXIMUMS LISTED IN EACH SECTION!!!!)   Double spaced, one-inch margins, 12-point font.

SECTION 1– Introduction of the story (total 10 points) 1-2 pages

            1.  Identify what “type” of literature it is?  (1 point)

–  Is it a retelling of events, a parable a teaching?

2  Who is in your passage?   (1 point)

– If the passage uses the word “I” who is the “I”?

            3.  Where does your passage occurs?  (1 point)

– Is there a country, town, place (someone’s house, by  a river, among a crowd)?

–   Even if the location is “vague” be sure to answer the question.

–  Again this may require you reading before your passage.

4.  What happens in your passage? (6 points)

            – Use your own words.

–  DO NOT copy the Bible.

            – Telling what happens in the passage should be at least ¾ pages long.

SECTION 2 – Observation and questions – Looking closely at a text (like the Bible) for the purpose of deeper understanding.   In observation you are looking for anything that does not make complete sense or anything you do not fully understand.  You are looking at the text and asking deeper questions.  This should be the LONGEST part of this paper. (30 points) 3- 6 pages

A.    Look verse by verse and ask questions.  Each verse can be listed with question to follow EACH VERSE!  IT SHOULD NOT BE A LIST OF QUESTIONS BUT A EXPLAIN OF WHAT YOU SEE AND WHAT QUESTIONS IT CAUSES YOU TO HAVE.  2-4 pages (20 points)

–  What are you curious about?

            – Are there words or terms you do not understand?

            –  Do you have questions about the people in the passage?

            –  Is there anything unusual?

            –  Are there ancient practices at work?

B.  Look at the passage as a whole. 1-2 pages (10 points)

            – Is there anything in the passage that you don’t understand?

–  What is the building tension, climax and resolution?

–  Are there things in the passage that contradict themselves?

–   Paradox (set of seemingly contradictory concepts that reveal a hidden and/or unexpected truth)

            – Look for literary devices.

                        – repeat phrases, images or words

                        – Comparison

                        – Contrast

                        – Simile (uses like or as) or metaphor (like or as)

                        –  Hyperbole (exaggeration)

                        – Symbolism
